Why is my chimney leaking?

There are several places water can enter from the chimney area of your roof.  Understanding where the leak is coming from can sometimes be difficult.  First off make sure the weather is nice and sunny and have a helper on hand in the event you need help!  Check all mortar joints and the top cap of the chimney for any loose joints or missing mortar.  Inspect all the metal flashing on the base of the chimney where it meets the roofing shingles.  The flashing is the sheet metal that is used to keep water away from the chimney and not allow water behind the step flashing installed on your chimney.  Look for loose or missing caulk or mortar where the metal meets the chimney on the upper portion.  Look for any penetrations that may allow water to enter.

Now you may be asking..
