3 Worry-Free Steps for Choosing a Roofing Contractor

Home ownership is the American dream – a dream that offers a lifetime of joy and belonging.  It also involves plenty of responsibility, including repair work.  Depending on the severity of the situation, those tasks can occasionally turn into nightmares. When it comes to determining which contractor to choose for your Dayton roofing installation or replacement job, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not the work will be completed professionally, and you most definitely shouldn’t have to be concerned with lawsuits or liability statutes that could cost you your home and your dream.

Ohio Workers Comp Cert 2013Allied Ins CertAlthough it’s not generally known, any time you hire someone to perform work on your property, you are responsible for not only their safety, but also for any damages that may occur.  At Van Martin Roofing, we understand that protecting your valuable investment means choosing a roofing contractor who meets certain conditions.  By following these 3 worry-free steps, you can be sure that the job will be done right the first time, and that you’ll be protected from possible legal ramifications.

  1. Check for current liability insurance.  General liability insurance removes the responsibility from you, the homeowner, and places it where it belongs, on the contractor. Make sure that your contractor is able to offer immediate proof of compliance in this area, before you sign any roofing replacement or installation contracts. Otherwise, if one of the workmen accidentally sends a hammer through your 2nd story bay window, or drops a nail gun on your prize-winning rose bush, you will be paying for the replacement out-of-pocket…..not the cut-rate crew you hired.
  2. Verify worker’s compensation insurance.  For the same reasons as above, the roofing contractor you hire must have current worker’s compensation insurance. Without it, any job-related accidents that occur on your property are your responsibility. That means hospital and doctor bills, as well as lost time, which can add up alarmingly.
  3. Check out the contractor’s reputation.  This can usually be accomplished pretty quickly by googling the company name with the word “complaint”, speaking to others who have used the contractor before you, or checking the status of industry certifications.

Understand that although saving a few thousand dollars may seem tempting, the risk you incur by allowing an uninsured, fly-by-night company to perform any type of work on your property could cost you more in the long run. It’s simply not worth it.

Van Martin is always properly and fully insured for liability and has current worker’s compensation insurance so, as a homeowner, you can rest easy. When you are in need of roof repairs or replacement, Van Martin is the company to contact in Dayton.
